More Surprises to come from out of the archives!

My cassette to MP3 converter arrived earlier than expected this week, so I'm happy to announce that I gave it a try and it worked fairly easily... (and lately I'm not used to things working out easily) - - so the real news here is that I'll be cracking open the Out Of Bodies archives and uploading never-before-heard SUPER RARE recordings, long forgotten jam sessions and comedy bits for the "Sides" section of our website!!

Just to test out the equipment I grabbed the first cassette I could see (which was unlabeled) and did a quick transfer without fussing with any of the settings - just "boom" - whatever's on there, here it is!! It turned out to be Dan doing an impromptu, live jam version of "Runaway", and I know he's going to cringe - but hey... it's still fun hearing this after all these years! Rough takes, mistakes, uncontrollable laughter - I plan on revealing it all! You want clean, organized, antiseptic crap? Well, there's too much of that stuff out there already... don't you think?

Honestly, I really don't know what to expect when I go through these tapes - there's going to be LOTS of stuff in those archives I haven't heard since the day we recorded it... so for me, this is going to be like taking a ride in one of those theme parks where you haven't been in years - a surprise every turn, and perhaps a few displaced invertebrate!!

I'll be announcing these new additions as I get 'em done - - soooo...

Stay tuned!!

  1. If I remember correctly , that Runaway demo was part of session where I was trying out my drum machine for the first time. I do remember I did a few quick tunes in one take but the best one I liked was a live version of "Rain , Beautiful Sun" which I did earlier as 4 track song. I hope Donald uploads that version demo from that same session. Dan Banic

    1. Oh crap, I'm imagining that scary-ass old lady that lived directly below you listening to that session... and her head doing a complete 360 like in that Exorcist movie!! (Whooh!! That gave me chills!) ...But as for adding those other uploads, I'm ON IT, Smokey!!

  2. Dan, I just realized something... (for everyone else excuse the boring technical talk) ...when I transferred that "Runaway" song, like I admitted I did it without checking any settings - turns out (although I still think it sounds pretty cool) I had it set to transfer in MONO! Yeah, like the old early Beatles George Martin monophonic mixes! heh heh!! Well, once I noticed that I've since corrected the setting - and you won't be hearing any more accidental MONO Out Of Bodies mixes - but it actually DID produce something that packs quite a potent PUNCH! Now I know what George Harrison meant when he was quoted as saying this...

"At that time the console was about this big with four faders on it. And there was one speaker right in the middle and that was it. When they invented stereo, I remember thinking 'Why? What do you want two speakers for?', because it ruined the sound from our point of view. You know, we had everything coming out of one speaker; now it had to come out of two speakers. It sounded like ... very ... naked."

  3. Yeah , Donald , The Mono does pack in more punch but you lose the stereo sound if you listen to it through headphones or earjacks like many people do on the internet. It's always best to transfer the songs to it's natural stereo so you get the complete spacious sound with the different instruments on the different sides of the channels. , it makes it a better listening experience and truer to the actual recording that song was mixed for. If you transfer the songs to mono you may get more punch but lose the quality and listening experience for future generations , sometimes too the mono mixing from a stereo track can cause phasing sound which is not good.

    1. Okay, I think I can accommodate you there! Check back later on tonight and click on the "Runaway" link again - it'll be STEREO, and I believe even a few seconds longer...
